Can Foreigners Ride a Motorbike in Vietnam Without a Vietnamese Licence?

You do not always need a Vietnamese licence to explore Vietnam by motorbike.

What matters is whether your existing licence is recognised in Vietnam and covers the motorcycle you plan to ride.

1. When Can You Ride Without a Vietnamese Licence?

Foreign riders may use licences recognised under applicable international conventions or agreements, provided they meet the relevant conditions. Not every visitor needs to convert their licence before travelling.

For details on IDPs, ASEAN licences and motorcycle categories, read our guide: International Driving Permit (IDP) in Vietnam.

2. Does Renting a Motorcycle or Joining a Tour Make You Legally Licensed?

A rental company handing over a motorcycle does not establish your legal entitlement to ride. Your rental agreement does not replace a recognised driving licence.

Flamingo’s rental and Guided Tour conditions require riders to hold a valid licence appropriate for their motorcycle and follow Vietnamese traffic rules. Check your documents before booking.

The same requirement applies whether you ride independently or join a guided tour. Your guide supports the journey, but cannot replace your licence—so distinguish between riding your own motorcycle and travelling as a passenger with a licensed rider.

3. Are Riding Experience and Travel Insurance Enough?

Experience helps you handle a motorcycle, but it does not replace a valid licence. Equally, holding a licence does not mean every route will suit your abilities.

Choose your motorcycle and itinerary around your experience with manual gears, mountain roads and unpaved terrain. A motorcycle you can manage confidently will make the journey more enjoyable.

Travel insurance does not give you permission to ride either. Ask your insurer to confirm in writing that your policy covers your motorcycle and planned activities. For more details, see Motorbike Travel Insurance in Vietnam.

4. What If Your Licence Does Not Meet the Requirements?

Resolve your licensing situation before committing to a self-ride trip. If you live in Vietnam, you may be able to explore licence conversion, depending on your circumstances.

If you are not eligible to ride, you can still enjoy the journey as a passenger with a properly licensed rider or choose another travel option. Paying a fine is not a substitute for holding the correct licence.

Before making your travel plans, check that your licence is recognised in Vietnam and covers the motorcycle you intend to ride. For document requirements, see our guide to International Driving Permit (IDP) in Vietnam.
